Fort McMurray break-and-enter arrests: Five suspects, including three youths, taken into custody

Wood Buffalo RCMP arrested five suspects in Fort McMurray break-and-enter incidents on July 12, 2026, recovering stolen property and seeking one suspect.

Five suspects arrested across Fort McMurray on July 12, 2026

Wood Buffalo RCMP say five people were arrested in separate break-and-enter investigations that unfolded across Fort McMurray on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The arrests include three local youths and two adult men from the Fort Chipewyan area, according to a police news release.

Police described the incidents as distinct events that occurred at different times and locations throughout the community. Investigators recovered stolen property in at least one case and continue to seek an outstanding suspect tied to the morning mall incident.

Abasand business break-in and stolen vehicle recovered

The first arrest was linked to a break-in at a business on Athabasca Avenue in the Abasand neighbourhood at 12:56 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a broken window and located a 16-year-old Fort McMurray male near the scene. RCMP allege the youth returned to the property driving a vehicle that had been taken from the business owner.

Police say the teen was arrested on multiple charges, including break and enter and operation of a vehicle while impaired over 80 mg. The youth was held for a Judicial Interim Release hearing and later released; his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2026.

Peter Pond Mall incident left one suspect at large

At 5:04 a.m., mall security at Peter Pond Mall reported three males inside the premises, prompting a police response. Video footage later showed only two males in view, suggesting the group had separated, police said. Officers confronted two individuals who attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended.

The detained suspects were identified as Fort McMurray youths and are facing charges including break and enter and obstructing a peace officer. Police recovered stolen items during a search, and the two youths were released with court dates set for Aug. 18 and Sept. 1, 2026. RCMP continue to search for the third, unidentified male linked to the mall incident.

Downtown Main Street back entrance break-in results in two arrests

A third break-and-enter occurred later that evening at 7:50 p.m., when suspects gained entry through the rear door of a business on the 9700 block of Main Street in downtown Fort McMurray. Patrol officers located and arrested two adult men, aged 47 and 60, who are residents of the Fort Chipewyan region.

Police have not released specific charges for the two older men beyond their involvement in the downtown break-in, but they are expected to face court proceedings in relation to property-crime allegations. RCMP say the downtown beat team’s proactive response led to their arrest at or near the scene.

RCMP statement on property crime and community safety

Inspector Troy Switzer of Wood Buffalo RCMP praised frontline officers for their fast response and credited their proactive patrols with disrupting criminal activity in the town. He said the arrests reflect the detachment’s ongoing focus on addressing property crime and getting alleged offenders before the courts to support business and resident safety.

The statement emphasized partnership with local security and businesses in identifying suspects and securing evidence. RCMP also urged anyone with information about the outstanding mall suspect to contact the detachment to assist ongoing inquiries.

Charges, custody status and upcoming court appearances

Across the three incidents, charges reported by police include break and enter, obstructing a peace officer and impaired operation of a vehicle beyond the legal limit. The youth arrested in the Abasand incident was detained for a Judicial Interim Release hearing and later released with a court date on Aug. 4, 2026. The two youths from the Peter Pond Mall matter were released and scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 18 and Sept. 1, 2026.

Police did not provide details on bail or next steps for the two adult suspects from Fort Chipewyan, but court processing was expected to follow standard procedures. RCMP stressed that charges are allegations and that suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Residents and business owners were reminded to report suspicious activity, secure premises, and preserve any surveillance footage that could assist investigators. The detachment also flagged efforts to maintain visible patrols in high-traffic commercial areas to deter similar offences.

Police continue to seek information about the third male seen inside Peter Pond Mall early Sunday, and anyone with tips or footage is asked to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP or Crime Stoppers. The investigation remains active as officers follow up on leads and prepare files for Crown counsel.
