The annual Perseids meteor shower is expected to be most active between Aug. 11 and 14, 2026, with the strongest display centered on the night of Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Astrophysicist Olivier Hernandez, director of the Planétarium de Montréal, says observers in Quebec and the eastern provinces should aim for around 10 p.m. local time on Aug. 12 for prime viewing.
Moon Phase Removes a Major Obstacle
Aug. 12, 2026 coincides with a new moon, meaning the Moon will be absent from the night sky and will not wash out faint meteors.
That lack of moonlight creates unusually dark conditions for the Perseids and improves the chances of seeing dozens of meteors per hour under clear, rural skies.
How Many Meteors to Expect
Under a truly dark, rural sky observers can expect a few dozen Perseids per hour at peak activity, with rates varying by location and light pollution.
In a bright urban centre such as Montreal a viewer might see around ten meteors per hour, while locations with minimal light like Saint‑Donat in Lanaudière could see more than sixty per hour.
Alternative Nights and Secondary Peaks
If cloud cover prevents viewing on Aug. 12, the nights immediately before and after often still deliver strong displays.
Hernandez notes that secondary intensity peaks frequently occur up to a day and a half after Earth passes through the densest part of the stream, providing additional chances to observe meteors.
Local Events and Organized Viewings
Several public events are planned to coincide with the Perseids peak, offering guided observation and outreach programs.
The Planétarium de Montréal will host observation nights on Aug. 12 and 13, during which lights at the Parc olympique and Stade Saputo will be dimmed to reduce local light pollution and astronomers will be on hand with telescopes and commentary.
ASTROLab and Dark‑Sky Opportunities
From Aug. 11 to 14, the ASTROLab at Parc national du Mont‑Mégantic will run scheduled observation nights featuring multimedia presentations, guided night hikes and telescope sessions.
Organizers stress that reservations are required and encourage visitors to book in advance to secure a spot at the park’s dark‑sky sites.
Why the Perseids Happen
The Perseids originate from debris shed by comet 109P/Swift‑Tuttle, which leaves a stream of dust and small rocks along its orbit.
When Earth crosses that stream each summer, particles roughly the size of sand grains to small peas enter the atmosphere at high speed, heat by friction and create visible streaks of light we call meteors.
Comet Swift‑Tuttle and Its Orbit
Comet 109P/Swift‑Tuttle was first recorded in July 1862 and carries a nucleus roughly 26 kilometres across, making it one of the larger known cometary nuclei.
Its long, tilted orbit takes about 133 years to complete, with the last close passage to the Sun occurring in December 1992 and the next expected in 2126.
Practical Tips for Better Viewing
To maximize your experience, travel away from urban light sources and allow about 30 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark.
Lie on a blanket or reclining chair with a wide view of the sky—feet pointing roughly northeast is a useful orientation—and bring warm layers, a red flashlight and patience; no telescope or binoculars are needed for meteors.
The Perseids offer one of the most reliable summer displays of the year, and this August’s new moon provides a particularly favorable window for observers across eastern Canada.
