Priddis motorcycle crash on May 25 kills 50-year-old father; family demands answers
A Priddis motorcycle crash on May 25 killed 50-year-old Cory Ryan, leaving his partner and 11-year-old daughter grieving as Diamond Valley RCMP investigate.
Cory Ryan, 50, died after his motorcycle collided with a turning vehicle at the intersection of Highway 22 and Priddis Green Drive in Foothills County, RCMP confirmed.
His common-law partner, Kira Shannon, and their 11-year-old daughter, Aurora, are left to arrange his funeral and seek clarity about the circumstances of the collision.
Shannon said the loss has upended the family’s life and that she is still waiting for fuller information from police about what happened.
Crash on Highway 22 and Priddis Green Drive
At about 3:53 p.m. on May 25, Ryan was riding eastbound on Highway 22 when his motorcycle struck a westbound white Volvo that was turning left onto Priddis Green Drive.
RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney confirmed the identity of the deceased and described the collision as a single-vehicle versus turning-vehicle impact that resulted in fatal injuries to the motorcyclist.
Investigators say there were no immediate signs of injuries to occupants of the Volvo, and the intersection was closed briefly while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Emergency response and fatality confirmed
An off-duty firefighter who witnessed the crash attempted life-saving measures at the site before first responders arrived, but Ryan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police and emergency medical crews secured the area and coordinated with traffic control to allow a collision reconstructionist to examine the scene, according to RCMP.
Slaney said investigators continue to document the scene and have not reported any additional injuries related to the incident.
RCMP investigation and evidentiary work
Diamond Valley RCMP is leading the ongoing investigation and has attended with a collision reconstruction specialist to determine contributing factors.
At this stage, investigators are examining vehicle positions, road conditions and witness statements to establish a timeline of the crash, with investigators remaining tight-lipped about potential charges.
RCMP have not released a full collision report publicly, and officials say any decision on charges will follow the evidence-gathering and review process.
Family’s account of delays and unanswered questions
Shannon says that communication from police has been frustrating, including a delay in the release of the collision report after the responding officer took a week off the day following the crash.
She told reporters she has repeatedly sought clarification and details from the RCMP but has received limited updates, leaving her feeling ignored and increasingly anxious for answers.
Shannon also said she was surprised there was no media release or public announcement after the crash and that the only public sign of the incident she could find was a temporary road closure notice.
Remembering Cory Ryan
Friends and family described Ryan as an outdoorsman who loved camping and fishing and as a devoted father who shared his passion for music with his daughter.
A former ATCO employee, Ryan had been receiving Workers’ Compensation Board benefits for nearly six years after exposure to mold, according to Shannon, and was remembered by loved ones for his voice and warmth.
Shannon said she wants her partner’s life acknowledged publicly and that it is important to her that people know he mattered to his family and community.
Crowdfunding and community support
A GoFundMe campaign established to support Shannon and Aurora has raised more than $1,800 so far, demonstrating immediate community response to the family’s loss.
Organizers say the funds will help with funeral arrangements and short-term needs for the family while they navigate next steps following the sudden death.
Local residents and acquaintances have posted condolences and memories online, calling for respectful handling of the family’s privacy as investigations continue.
The family continues to press RCMP for more information about the collision as they make funeral plans and seek closure, and authorities say any update on charges or findings will be released once investigators complete their review.
