Alex Xu confesses to killing mother as body-worn footage shown to jury

Body-cam Captures Admission in Alex Xu murder trial as Police Find Mother’s Body Near Foothills

Body-cam footage in the Alex Xu murder trial shows the accused admitting he killed his mother and pointing police to her body near Foothills Medical Centre.

Calgary police officers told a courtroom they responded to a welfare check on June 30, 2023, and that body-worn camera video played for a jury captured the moment the accused, identified as Alex (Aixin) Xu, told an officer he had killed his mother.
The footage shows Xu calmly indicating a location east of the Foothills Medical Centre and voluntarily directing officers toward where the body was later located.

Officer greets two men before confession

Const. Jameel Ali testified that he approached two men standing beside a parked SUV and offered a friendly greeting before the interaction turned to a confession.
According to Ali, the younger of the men identified himself as Alex Xu and answered the officer’s initial question with a direct admission that he had murdered his mother.

Accused points to spot where body was later found

Body-worn camera video shown to jurors captured Xu pointing toward houses on 29th Street N.W., east of the hospital grounds, as he described the location of the body.
Within minutes of that exchange, Const. Felipe Fontan, who arrived shortly after Ali, located the deceased a short distance from where Xu had indicated.

Victim identified and charge outlined in court

Court records and testimony identified the deceased as Alice (Jingying) Ai, and Crown prosecutors have charged Xu with second-degree murder.
The charge was confirmed in open court as the jury viewed the police footage and heard testimony describing the officers’ actions at the scene.

Courtroom testimony on accused’s demeanour

Ali told the Crown he did not observe any signs of intoxication or impairment in Xu during the encounter, but under cross-examination conceded the accused’s calm conduct struck him as unusual.
Defence lawyer Dale Fedorchuk questioned whether the accused’s behaviour was outside the norm, and Ali said he had been surprised by how Xu was acting when he made the admission.

Scene response and family presence described

Officers said Xu was at the location with his father when they arrived for the welfare check, and police quickly secured the suspect at the scene.
Video played for the jury shows Ali instructing Xu to get on the ground, handcuffing him and placing him in a cruiser before continuing to ask pointed questions about the location of the victim.

Legal teams and next steps in the trial

The Crown is being led in court by prosecutor Vicki Faulkner while the defence for Xu is represented by Dale Fedorchuk, and the matter is being heard before a jury in the Court of King’s Bench in Calgary.
Courtroom participants were told the trial will resume on Monday, May 4, 2026, when additional testimony and evidence presentation are expected to continue.

The footage and testimony presented so far form a central element of the Crown’s case that the accused admitted responsibility at the scene and directed officers to the location of Alice Ai’s body.
As the trial proceeds, jurors will hear further evidence and witness accounts that the Crown says will support the charge of second-degree murder.
