European Bakery and Deli marks 20 years with expanded 17th Avenue storefront

European Bakery and Deli on 17th Avenue in Calgary marks 20 years with a larger storefront, higher production and renewed ties to customers and newcomers.

The Duraj family’s European Bakery and Deli on 17th Avenue S.W. celebrated its 20th anniversary on May 20, 2026, unveiling a nearly doubled storefront that has already drawn heavy foot traffic. The new space, part production area and part front-of-house café, opened as the family marked two decades of baking for Calgary residents and recent arrivals alike. Customers and staff say the renovation crystallizes the bakery’s evolution from a small takeout counter to a city institution.

Expanded storefront blends new seating with family history

The renovation added a larger serving area and more room for morning production while preserving elements of the original shop. Framed photos of Shaqir and Lumnije at work in Kosovo hang in the new seating area, and the flooring was designed to echo the previous layout. Sisters Aulona and Gona collaborated on the redesign, tying family memories to practical upgrades for higher volume.

Daily rhythm driven by long nights and signature breads

Loaves of pitalka and other breads are prepared overnight so the display is full by morning, and customers report items disappearing quickly. Shaqir remains the watchful baker behind the dough for their renowned burek, while Lumnije focuses on cakes and pastries. The bakery also supplies bread to several hotels and local delis, and employees say production peaks in the small kitchen are impressive during busy shifts.

Roots in Kosovo shaped generations of bakers

Shaqir and Lumnije learned baking in the Has region of Kosovo, picking up techniques passed down through family. The couple arrived in Calgary as refugees in 1999 and gradually rebuilt their trade here, first selling burek from a modest spot in Westbrook Mall. Their hands-on training and family recipes remain at the core of the bakery’s offerings.

Risk and persistence built a neighbourhood anchor

Opening day at their 17th Avenue location came on March 20, 2006, after the family took a significant financial risk to secure a loan, even putting their home up as collateral. Early years required multiple jobs and long hours to keep the business afloat, a sacrifice their children recall as formative. Over time, persistence has translated into steady community support and business partnerships across the city.

A community connector for newcomers and longtime customers

The bakery has developed a reputation as a gathering place where regulars and newcomers are welcomed like family. Staff recount moments such as reconnecting with customers who return decades later for celebrations, underscoring the personal links the shop fosters. Families from every quadrant of Calgary now drop by for daily staples as well as specialty items tied to the Durajs’ heritage.

Plans for growth while keeping 17th Avenue as home base

Although retirement is a distant prospect for Shaqir and Lumnije, the family is exploring additional locations around Calgary to meet demand. The Durajs say any expansion will prioritize preserving their recipes and the hands-on quality that defines their bakery. For now, the enlarged 17th Avenue storefront will continue to serve as their flagship and a visible reminder of the family’s journey.

The new European Bakery and Deli space on 17th Avenue is both a practical response to increased demand and a physical archive of the Duraj family’s story, marrying immigrant traditions with a modern café atmosphere that Calgarians have embraced.
