Edmonton motorists and transit users face a series of road closures and lane restrictions this week as the city advances multiple infrastructure repairs and LRT works. The city says the disruptions, driven by storm damage repairs and planned rehabilitation, will affect bridges, arterial roads and several LRT-adjacent intersections. Officials are urging drivers to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours and consult traffic updates before travelling.
Low Level Bridges closures
From Friday, July 17 at 8 p.m. through Monday, July 20 at 6 a.m., the north and south lanes of the Low Level Bridges will be closed for work that also affects approaching sections of Connors Road and Scona Road. Lane reductions and temporary closures will be in place on nearby links including portions of 98 Avenue, the Grierson Hill access ramp and the cloverleaf connections between Grierson Hill and McDougall Hill Road. The city recommends motorists use the James MacDonald Bridge as the primary detour route while the Low Level Bridges are inaccessible.
Motorists should expect congestion on alternate crossings and plan additional time for commutes across the river. Emergency personnel and traffic control will be on site to direct traffic, and drivers are asked to obey signage and temporary speed limits through the closures.
High Level Bridge sidewalk and drainage repairs
The east staircase to the river valley and Kinsmen Park has reopened, and pedestrians can use the east sidewalk on the High Level Bridge to access trails and stair connections. On July 20 the city and EPCOR will close the west sidewalk for repairs to damaged drainage infrastructure and to address slope erosion caused by recent rainfall. The west-side closure will affect pedestrians and cyclists until repairs are complete.
Pedestrians and cyclists can use the east sidewalk or cross over using stair connections to 109 Street to reach west-side paths. The city advises people to follow posted pedestrian detours and to exercise caution near active work zones.
Yellowhead Trail flood damage repairs
Repair crews are working on sections of Yellowhead Trail damaged by recent flooding, and Yellowhead Trail west is closed between St. Albert Trail and 97 Street until further notice. Drivers should avoid the area where possible and use alternate east–west routes while repairs continue. The city warns that delays are likely and requests that motorists adhere to posted signs and directions from on-site personnel.
Officials did not provide a firm reopening date for the affected Yellowhead segment, saying the timeline depends on the extent of repairs and weather conditions. Motorists using regional routes should monitor updates and consider diverting to arterial streets to reduce congestion around the repair zone.
Valley Line West LRT work at Stony Plain Road and 149 Street
Roadwork tied to the Valley Line West project resumes on July 20 at the southwest corner of Stony Plain Road and 149 Street, bringing lane reductions and turn restrictions at the intersection. Left turns from westbound Stony Plain Road will be limited to one lane, eastbound right turns onto 149 Street will be prohibited, and southbound traffic on 149 Street north of Stony Plain Road will be reduced to a single lane. The southwest and southeast corner works will also affect right-turn movements and vehicle access across Stony Plain Road at several local streets.
Vehicle crossings at Sylvancroft Lane and 127 Street will be closed, while access will be maintained at 126 Street with jug-handle turns replacing some left-turn movements at 126, 127 and 131 streets. On July 21, access to and from 87 Avenue via the south side of 182 Street will be closed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. daily for an expected week; drivers should follow temporary detours and expect nighttime restrictions.
Capital Line South, 86 Street and 91 Street rehabilitation
Work on the Capital Line South extension led to lane closures beginning July 18 on both sides of 111 Street at Saddleback Road and 19 Avenue, a configuration that will reduce through lanes while preserving turning movements onto 111 Street. That work is scheduled to continue for about one month as crews progress through staging and utility adjustments. Concurrently, 86 Street north from 58 Avenue to Coronet Road will be closed starting July 20 for approximately one month for full road rehabilitation, with northbound traffic detoured via 58 Avenue to 91 Street.
Starting July 20, off-peak and overnight repairs will also close one lane on 91 Street between 34 Avenue and Whitemud Drive, and one lane on 34 Avenue from 91 Street to 99 Street. Some Edmonton Transit Service routes will be detoured while work is active; riders should consult the Transit Alerts page for up-to-date route and schedule information.
