Wood Buffalo RCMP charge Fort McMurray man in alleged hit and run

Fort McMurray hit-and-run: 58-year-old charged after Franklin Avenue collision and arrest at Peter Pond Mall

Fort McMurray hit-and-run on June 16 led to the arrest of a 58-year-old at Peter Pond Mall; he faces multiple charges and will appear in court July 15.

A Fort McMurray hit-and-run reported on the afternoon of June 16 ended with the arrest of a 58-year-old man after police located him inside the Peter Pond Mall.
According to Wood Buffalo RCMP, the collision between a Chevrolet Equinox and a grey Chevrolet Silverado was reported at 4:13 p.m. on Franklin Avenue, and the driver of the Silverado fled the scene before being found.

Collision reported on Franklin Avenue at 4:13 p.m. June 16

Wood Buffalo RCMP received a call just after 4 p.m. on June 16 reporting a crash involving two vehicles on Franklin Avenue.
Police say the two drivers briefly confronted one another at the scene before the driver of the grey Silverado left the area and drove to a nearby shopping centre.

Emergency responders attended the collision but the suspect vehicle was no longer at the immediate scene when officers arrived.
Investigators later traced the Silverado to the Peter Pond Mall, where RCMP located a male matching the description provided by witnesses.

Driver located and arrested inside Peter Pond Mall

RCMP officers say the suspect, later identified as a resident of the Wood Buffalo region, was found inside the mall a short time after the initial report.
Police allege the driver was impaired at the time of the incident and took him into custody following the arrest.

The man was held for a judicial interim release hearing before being released from custody pending further court proceedings.
RCMP have not released additional details about the circumstances of the alleged impairment or any injuries to those involved in the crash.

Charges laid: failure to stop, court order breach, open liquor and uninsured vehicle

Wood Buffalo RCMP charged 58-year-old Gioacchino Mazzoca with multiple offences related to the incident.
The charges include failure to stop after an accident, disobeying a court order, transporting liquor in an open container and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

Those charges reflect both the alleged conduct at the time of the June 16 crash and alleged breaches of earlier legal requirements, police said.
RCMP did not disclose whether additional charges are under consideration as their investigation continues.

Court date set for July 15 at Alberta Court of Justice, Fort McMurray

Following his release from custody, Mazzoca is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 15.
The judicial interim release hearing determined he could be released pending that appearance under conditions set by the court.

Court documents and proceedings will provide the formal venue for evidence to be presented and for the accused to respond to the charges.
As with all criminal matters, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

RCMP message to the public on reporting suspected impaired drivers

Wood Buffalo RCMP reiterated a routine public safety appeal following the arrest, urging residents to call 911 if they witness suspicious activity or suspect an impaired driver.
Police noted that timely calls from the public can be crucial in locating vehicles and preventing further incidents on local roads.

RCMP also encouraged witnesses to provide as much detail as possible about vehicles, occupants and the direction of travel when reporting a suspected impaired driver.
The force said such information helps investigators reconstruct events and supports charges where offences are identified.

The June 16 incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety and impaired driving in the region, and it will proceed through Alberta’s judicial system in the weeks ahead.

A 58-year-old man has been charged in connection with the Fort McMurray hit-and-run and is due to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 15.
