Pierre-Laporte bridge shooting prompts 12-hour closure as BEI opens investigation

Pierre‑Laporte bridge shooting triggers overnight chase; suspect found dead, one witness injured

An overnight Pierre‑Laporte bridge shooting ignited a multi‑jurisdiction police chase that left one witness wounded and a suspect dead, paralyzing the interrivers link for more than 12 hours.

Shooting on Pierre‑Laporte Bridge sparks multi‑jurisdiction pursuit

Shortly after 11:21 p.m. Friday, police received reports that a vehicle was travelling the wrong way on Autoroute 20 toward the Pierre‑Laporte bridge, prompting an immediate police response. Officers engaged the vehicle and a collision occurred near the bridge, after which gunfire was reported and at least one person was struck.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as drivers abandoned cars and ran for cover, while reinforcements from several police services converged on the area. The incident drew officers from the Sûreté du Québec, the Service de police de la Ville de Québec and the Service de police de Lévis, according to initial accounts from people at the scene.

Collision and witness injury

Police say the fleeing driver struck another vehicle during the pursuit and that an individual involved in that crash fired gunshots, seriously wounding a witness before taking another vehicle and fleeing. The witness was transported and, as of the BEI statement, is in stable condition.

Eyewitnesses who were near the Lévis side of the bridge described a surreal scene. One resident said families were hurriedly shepherded away from their cars and that the first confirmed word of a collision and shooting took time to reach those trapped by road closures.

Tactical response and suspect located unconscious

Following the initial shooting, the suspect continued on Autoroute 20 and a second pursuit was mounted. Police deployed spike belts to halt the vehicle, which came to rest on Route 132 near the intersection of Route Lallemand and Boulevard Guillaume‑Couture in Lévis shortly after 1:25 a.m.

Members of the Sûreté du Québec’s Groupe tactique d’intervention (GTI) approached the stopped vehicle and found the occupant unresponsive inside. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene and police have not released the identity pending notification and the ongoing independent investigation.

Independent investigation opened by BEI

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) confirmed it has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the operation, as required when a non‑police person dies or sustains serious injury during a police intervention. The BEI said seven investigators were dispatched to the scene to determine the facts surrounding the shooting, the chase and any use of force.

The BEI also noted that the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal was called in to help clarify the sequence of events that led to the pursuit and the subsequent death. Authorities urged anyone who witnessed the events or captured footage to come forward to assist the inquiry.

Scale of police response and public reaction

Several witnesses reported seeing what they estimated to be dozens of police vehicles and officers at the scene, some in tactical gear and carrying high‑calibre weapons. Those on both sides of the St. Lawrence River said the heavy law enforcement presence and the sounds of the confrontation were unnerving and disrupted the normal overnight rhythm in the area.

Local residents who were blocked on the bridge or in adjacent streets described long periods of uncertainty. One observer said they remained in their car for hours before learning details, while others turned to social media to track developing reports as official information trickled in.

Traffic disruption and recovery operations

The Pierre‑Laporte bridge remained closed to southbound traffic until 11:20 a.m. Saturday while police completed collision reconstructions and investigative steps, the provincial Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility said through a spokesperson. Although lanes were reopened after the morning, congestion and delays continued in the area for several hours.

The extended closure affected commuters and commercial traffic linking Quebec City and Lévis, and municipal officials warned that travel times would remain irregular while investigators finished on‑scene work and evidence collection.

The BEI reiterated its request that anyone with information, video or photographs related to the events contact its offices to support the independent inquiry. Investigators will examine communications, video evidence and the actions of all parties involved as they determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting, the subsequent pursuit and the death of the suspect.
