Teen charged with attempted murder after incident at Lester B. Pearson High School in Calgary
A 17-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after an incident at Lester B. Pearson High School in Calgary; police arrested the youth minutes after entering the school.
Incident and immediate police response
A disturbance at Lester B. Pearson High School in northeast Calgary prompted officers to respond at about 12:05 p.m. on Thursday when staff reported a youth armed with a knife. Witnesses told police the youth smashed property and threatened students and staff while attempting to stab a student.
Officers entered the building quickly and took the suspect into custody within minutes, ending the immediate threat to the school population. The Calgary Police Service said their rapid response allowed them to secure the scene and ensure no other victims were present.
Arrest and charges
The suspect, a 17-year-old, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with attempted murder. Additional charges include uttering threats and mischief under $5,000, according to the police release.
Because the suspect is a youth, his name is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and cannot be published. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Monday.
Lockdown and time to resolution
School officials placed the building on lockdown as officers moved through corridors and classrooms to check for further danger. The lockdown remained in effect until police completed their sweep and confirmed there were no additional threats to students or staff.
Calgary Police Service Staff Sgt. Mike Sushelnitsky told reporters that officers on scene were able to resolve the situation in under six-and-a-half minutes, a response time the service highlighted as critical in limiting harm. He also emphasized the role of on-site procedures in helping manage the incident safely.
Injuries and student care
One student sustained minor injuries in what police characterized as an alleged assault and received treatment for those injuries. No other physical injuries were reported, and there were no fatal or life-threatening injuries identified by investigators.
School officials and the Calgary Police Service confirmed that supports and resources are being offered to students and staff affected by the event. Counselling and debriefing services were made available to help those present cope with the aftermath.
Investigators’ preliminary findings
Police investigators indicated they believed the attack was premeditated based on statements and the circumstances at the scene, the Calgary Police Service said in its release. Detectives continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses and review video and other material that may shed light on the suspect’s actions and planning.
Investigators have not released a motive and said the probe remains active as they work to complete their file for the Crown. Police cautioned that details may be limited while the youth’s matter proceeds through the youth justice system.
School operations and safety review
Lester B. Pearson High School remained focused on student safety in the hours after the incident, with staff coordinating with the Calgary Board of Education and police on next steps. Officials also signalled plans to review the timeline and effectiveness of the lockdown and emergency procedures.
Staff Sgt. Sushelnitsky noted the importance of regular lockdown drills, saying the preparedness of students and staff "may well have saved lives." School administrators and trustees typically examine such incidents to determine whether changes to protocols, training or communication are needed.
Community members and parents were informed of the incident through school and police communications, and district officials urged families to use the supports provided. The Calgary Board of Education and the school said they will share updates as appropriate while respecting the privacy and legal protections that apply to youth involved in criminal proceedings.
The youth cannot be named due to legal protections under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and the matter will continue before the courts as investigators complete their work.
