Canucks hire Richard Seeley as assistant GM to run Abbotsford AHL team

Richard Seeley named Canucks assistant GM and Abbotsford AHL general manager, returns to B.C.

Richard Seeley joins the Vancouver Canucks as assistant general manager and will run the Abbotsford AHL club, bringing a player-development focus rooted in his Powell River upbringing and long AHL management experience.

Immediate hire and role

Seeley was formally added to the Canucks’ front office this month as assistant general manager with responsibility for overseeing the organization’s American Hockey League operations in Abbotsford.
The appointment tasks him with player acquisition and development during a rebuild led by newly promoted NHL general manager Ryan Johnson.

Powell River beginnings and lifelong Canucks ties

Raised in Powell River, Seeley says his early hockey memories are inseparable from the Canucks and the province’s hockey culture.
He recalls the 1994 playoff stretch and the franchise moments that helped shape his fandom and later professional ambitions.

Playing career that shaped his outlook

A sixth-round pick by Los Angeles in 1997, Seeley’s playing résumé includes stints in the BC Junior League, the Western Hockey League and seven professional seasons in the American Hockey League.
His career extended overseas with stops in Germany, Austria, Croatia and Northern Ireland, and he finished his playing days having represented 10 professional clubs without appearing in an NHL game.

Management track record in North America and Europe

After retiring in 2011, Seeley earned a master’s degree in sports management from Ulster University and transitioned into coaching and administration.
He joined the Los Angeles Kings organization in 2015, rose through roles in the ECHL and AHL, and led the Ontario Reign as general manager, compiling a winning points percentage and consistent regular-season results.

Development philosophy and player relations

Seeley frames his approach to prospects through the lens of his playing experience, emphasizing empathy, communication and the rigors of adapting to pro hockey.
He has said the lessons learned from leadership groups and from pushing to reach the NHL inform how he counsels young players and builds development pathways.

Connection to the Canucks’ rebuild

Seeley and Ryan Johnson first aligned when Johnson ran Vancouver’s farm operations, and the two executives share a vision for structuring the club’s depth pipeline.
Los Angeles general manager Ken Holland granted permission for the Canucks to pursue Seeley, a move that the Vancouver organization views as adding an experienced operator to shepherd its minor-league talent.

Seeley’s return to British Columbia also carries personal significance: after more than a decade in Southern California, he will relocate closer to family roots and to a community that shaped his hockey identity.
His son, who plays minor hockey, and his family will now be part of a hockey environment Seeley describes as rewarding to help cultivate and develop.
